 Tips for tourists
Like all big cities, Rome has its share, some of it avoidable (do not tempt with flashy, expensive jewellery, dangling and/or open purses, easily accessible wallets, unlocked cars, etc.), some of it not (a home broken into even though furnished with six locks, an alarm system and a pit bull dog!). Hold on tightly to purses and briefcases and keep them away from the traffic side of the street. Keep your eyes open on buses for suspicious characters - especially on the heavily traveled buses and metros. Warn someone you think is a potential victim; you would want such a warning.

Representing a crucial turning point in Medieval painting, Giotto is by unanimous consensus the most genial, versatile artist of his age. His contemporaries already compared him to the great masters of antiquity, even declaring him superior for his rare talent , his unrivaled skill in depicting the passions. More than any other Giotto was to transmute art from Grrek to Latin, as the theorist Cennino Cennini was to write of him at the end of the 14th century. This statement alone suffices to reveal how Giotto's contemporaries were already aware of the revolutionary nature of this painting. From the Greek language, the Byzantine modes handed down over the centuries, through him a new style, modern and natural, was to emerge. Giotto renewed the conception of pictorial space, which appears three-dimensional in his paintings. Equally innovative was his representation of figures solid, volumetric, no longer ethereal bodies fluctuating in an improbable space devoid of perspective but flesh-and-blood personages with realistic features. Like his artistic nature, Giotto's human character was marked by a strong practical sense and a certainty of his own gifts which allowed him to maintain excellent relations with clients and a perfect entrepreneurial organization. It seems probable that he was apprenticed in Florence to Cimabue, who according to tradition, mentioned also by Dante, was to be outstripped by his pupil (Cimabue thought himself master in painting/ and now the cry is Giotto, Purg.XI, 94-95). Between 1290 and 1304 Giotto frescoed the Stories of St. Francis in the Upper Basilica of Assisi. Before the end of the century he stayed in Rome and Rimini. By 1305 he had completed the Arena Chapel for Enrico Scrovegni in Padua. Returning to Florence, now famous and highly esteemed (and very well paid), he worked in Santa Croce for wealthy clients such as the Bardi and Peruzzi families. At Naples in 1329 at the court of Robert of Anjou with his pupil Maso di Banco, he was now principle master and painter.He died at Florence where in the meantime he had also been appointed superintend of fortifications and master builder of the Duomo.

This column was erected in 113 A.D. and the frieze on it illustrates the course of war against the Dacians on the territory of modern Romania. The column is made of a series of 18 marble drums ending with the Doric capital. Inside of it are 185 steps leading to the top. There are 23 spirals of bas-relieves 200meters long with 2,500 figures illustrating in detail the various phases of Trajan's military achievements in the Dacian campaigns of 101-102 and 105-106 A.D. The carving was carried out in less than four years. On the summit of the column was a gilded bronze statue of Trajan, that disappeared in uncertain epoch, which place was occupied since 1587 by a statue of St Peter, by Tommaso Della Porta. The total height of the column is 30meters (40m with the statue). The remains of emperor were placed in a cella inside of the base of the column in a golden urn. In the 14th century beside it was erected a chapel dedicated to St Nicolas, and a hermit who took care of it placed on the top of the column a bell with a long rope, so that it was turned into a kind of bell-tower. The chapel was destroyed by the order of Paul III. The artistic value of the column is extraordinary and reflects the period of maximum blooming of arts and tastes of the epoch of Trajan. Unfortunately the smog keeps on damaging this monument as well as all the other Roman treasures.
